HKSQ Student Project Competition 2017 – Sanmina Plant Visit

The HKSQ Company Based Student Project Competition aims to offer an opportunity for students to work on an actual industrial case and propose resolution annually. This allows university students to gain experience of resolving an industrial problem. The competition included three sessions. The first session is problems briefing and selection those problems are designed and would be explained by Sponsor Company. Sanmina Corporation is the sponsor company in 2017. The second session is factory visit and the last session is presentation of suggested solutions by different universities students.

The second session - plant visit was held on 17 Feb 2017. Mr. CP Chiu (Former Chairman, HKSQ), Mr. Eddie Chan, Mr. Theo Wong and I led the visit. After registration, Theo and CP led us to go to the travel bus. In the bus, I briefed the schedule and rules of the visit. We arrived the plant on time.

In the beginning, Mr. William Chui (VP) briefed the background of Sanmina IMS Shenzhen Plant and its products & different IT and management system employed in Sanmina.

Mr. Solomon Poon (VP – Quality and Operation Excellence) mentioned the arrangement of the visit.

And then Mr. Quincy Wong (GM – MU2), Mr. Edward Law (Director, Operations) and Ms. Becky Chan (Director, Program Management) stated three competition questions separately.

After that we separated into two teams to visit Sanmina plant. Some regulations were stated for students to follow.

We needed to change anti-ESD cloth before visit the plant.

During the visit in the plant, their representative explained different processes to students.

After the visit, we went back to the conference room and then went to the restaurant for lunch. We took some photos for memory.

In afternoon session, we separated students into three teams for discussing their competition topics. The topic three in the Room A was “Equipment utilization improvement”. Mr. Quincy Wong explained some data about overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

Mr. Edward Law explained the topic two about “Labour resource utilization improvement”.

Ms. Becky Chan described the topic three for Inventory reduction and supply chain management.

During the discussion session, I took some photos for each team under different universities for memory.
