HKQF Career Talk on Testing & Certification Industry 2016

The Career Talk on Testing and Certification Industry 2016 for secondary school was co-organized by Hong Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Education (HKASME), Hong Kong Qualification Framework (HKQF), The Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification (HKCTC) and Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS) and held on 8th October 2016 at Heung To Secondary School (Tseung Kwan O).

In the beginning, Mr. B Ng (Sir) introduced each speaker and presented souvenir.


The first speaker was Dr. Daria Wong and her topic entitled “Understanding Testing and Certification”.  Her presentation covered the introduction of Testing, Inspection and Certification, HKAS and HKCTC, as well as, profile of the TIC industry of Hong Kong.


Dr. Daria Wong briefed each testing included Toys and Children’s Products, Textile, Medical Testing, Jewelry, Food, Chinese Medicine, as well as different Certification Services in Hong Kong.  Then she briefed the services in Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS) included HOKLAS, HKCAS and HKIAS.


So many students attended the talk in Saturday morning!


Keff Lau (Managing Director, ANSECO – AsiaInspection Group) was the second speaker and his presentation named “Consumer Product Testing Industry in Hong Kong and Chance for Students”.  He said that TIC industry had grown substantially since 1980s.  


Then he briefed the Certification Scheme for Testing Personnel (PCSTP) from Hong Kong Association for Testing, Inspection and Certification (HKTIC) which included Chemical, Construction Material, Electrical Product, Microbiological, Textile & Garment, as well as, Toys and Hardlines.  There were four new disciplines included Calibration, Environmental, Food and QA.


Finally, he mentioned three general paths of career development for student and they were Business, Technical and Operation.  Three paths could become management at the end.


I was the third speaker and represented Industry Training Advisory Committee for Testing, Inspection & Certification Industry (TIC-ITAC) under Hong Kong Qualification Framework (HKQF) to give the career talk.  Firstly, I played HKQF – TIC video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqwJspmkdYw).


Then I briefed the career path of TIC industry from Technical Personnel to Supervisory Personnel and then to Managerial Personnel.


I also briefed the quality and innovation movement in Hong Kong, as well as, introduced Professional Association (e.g. Hong Kong Society for Quality) and Hong Kong Science and Technology Park.


When I mentioned my career experience, I quoted Steve Jobs Stanford Commencement Address (2005) that “You can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards.  So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” Finally, I showed my connection of dots in my past experience.


Ms. Kathy Choi (Food Certification Officer, SGS) was the last speaker and who is the winner of the Award Scheme for Learning Experiences in TIC discipline.  She would like to share her background, study and working experience to students.


She shared the requirement of Food Certification Officer which included Food related degree, 3 to 5 year Food related experience, independent, integrity and good communication skill.  


Finally, she mentioned the development of TIC industry including R&D, Testing, Technology Support, Inspection, QA, Consultancy, Certification, Product Research and Improvement, etc.
