TRIZfest 2016 – Day 1

In 2016, there is the TRIZ 60 anniversary and its founder, Genrich Altshuller’s 90 years birthday.  The 12th International Conference “TRIZfest 2016” was conducted on 28 to 30 July 2016 in Beijing, China which co-organized by the International TRIZ Association (MATRIZ) and China Association for Quality (CAQ).  It is my first time to join the conference after my MATRIZ level 2 coures and I would like to summarize it for sharing below.  Before the conference on 28 July 2016, I took a photo with Mr. Sergei Ikovenko (President, MATRIZ).


The first day venue was in International Culture Center of Capital Normal University. I took a photo inside the hall.  




Firstly, Dr. Mark Barkan (TRIZ Master) gave an opening speech.  He briefed some background of MATRIZ and the conference.


Then Dr. Duan Yonggang (段永剛) (Secretary general, CAQ) gave welcome speech and he was honour to cooperate with MATRIZ to promote Innovation and Quality.  It was welcome to introduce TRIZ into Chinese industry to enhance Innovation Capability.


Then I was honour to be invited as Hong Kong representative (HKSQ) and gave a toast with CAQ and MATRIZ representatives to all participants with CAQ and MATRIZ representation.


Mr. Sergei Ikovenko (President, MATRIZ) chaired the TRIZ award to two companies which one was from China and the other one was from India.


The first company granted the TRIZ award was National Institute of Clenan-and-Low-Carbon Energy (NICE), Shenhua Group, China.


The second company granted the TRIZ award was GE Technical Centre, India.


Then Mr. Ikovenko presented a souvenir to Dr. Duan Yonggang (CAQ) for their support on this international TRIZ conference. 


After that Dr. Simon Litvin (TRIZ Master) presented a topic named “To Jubilee of G. Altshuller” to celebrate  Altshuller’s 90 years birthday.  Firstly,  Dr. Simon Litvin briefed Altshuller’s main unique achievements such as originator of TRIZ, first President of MATRIZ,  ARIZ, etc.  The photo showed Simon met Altshuller in 1980 and he was 30 years old.  Then Simon told us a story about them.  One day Altshuller’s wife asked Simon didn’t talk with Altshuller about TRIZ until achieved the location.  Simon remembered it but didn’t know “Why”.  During Altshuller driving, he kept clam but a TRIZ related topic was accidentally mentioned.  At that time, Altshuller turn his face to Simon and started to discuss with him but he was forgot to driving!!!   


During the break, I took a photo with Dr. Duan Yonggang for memory.


I also met Prof. TriZit Benjaboonyazit (Asst. Professor, Head of Electrical Engineering Program, Faculty of Engineering, Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology) and took a photo for memory.  We first meet was in “The 6th International Conference on Systematic Innovation - ICSI 2015 (Day 2)”.  And his team project named  “Dynamic Car-Wheel-Lock”.


The first keynote was presented by Dr. Li Wenhua (Director of R&D Management and Technology Marketing, NICE, Shenhua Group) and his topic entitled “TRIZ Deployment in NICE” .  Unfortunately, Dr. Li was not available to come for sudden affair.  Dr. Yongwei Sun (VP for Industrial Relations & Level 4 Certified, MATRIZ) represented him to present their effort and achievement.  Firstly, Dr. Sun introduced Shenhua Group which was a leading state-owned mining and energy company of China and founder in October 1995.  


Dr. Sun also mentioned the six NICE technologies focus including “Clean Coal Conversion & Utilization”, “Water Processes”, “Coal-based Materials”, “Distributed Energy”, “Hydrogen & Applications”, “Catalysis” and “Clean Coal Conversion & Utilization”.   TRIZ supported most focus areas except “Hydrogen & Applications”.  Then Dr. Sun mentioned how NICE employed both TRIZ and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) and one of slogan was “TRIZ, The Way We Innovate! Six Sigma, The Way We Work”.  Both techniques were complementary each other through the Project Define, Concept Design and Optimization.


Dr. Sun briefed the NICE TRIZ Roadmap and summarized TRIZ training performed such as 7x L1 trainings since 2013 (150 people), 3x L2 trainings since 2014 (60 people) and 1x L3 training since 2016 (30 people).  The following diagram showed who NICE driving NICE TRIZ through Pull and Push approach.  Their positioning was Mechanism Production (Six Sigma & TRIZ), Talents Production and Results Production.  


Mr. Oleg Abramov (Managing Principal, Algorithm, Ltd; GEN3 Partners) was the second speaker and his presentation named “Product-Oriented MPV Analysis to Identify Voice of the Product”.   To identify the voice of the product (VOP), TRIZ developers proposed the Main Parameters of Value (MPV).  


Firstly Mr. Oleg Abramov introduced the Product-Oriented MPV Analysis for new product development as the following diagram.  Then he compared the Customer-orient MPV analysis and Product-oriented MPV analysis.  After that he proposed enhancement on Product and Customer MPV profiles.


Mr. Oleg Abramov employed S-curve Analysis to rank the product MPVs.  Then he showed us two case studies named “Smart Antenna (SA) VOP and VOC” and “Identifying Latent Customers for an SA”.  Finally, Mr. Oleg Abramov concluded that this extension made MPV analysis more holistic.


Ms. Tiziana Bertoncelli (Research Engineer at GE Global Research) was the third speaker and her topic entitled “TRIZ and Value Engineering: Deeper Integration as Innovation Enhancer”.  She briefed the R&D effort for their business and combined all resource/effort for Design To Value (DTV) approach.


In the beginning, she introduced TRIZ and VA/VE in GE and its development history since 1940.  Their job plan followed the steps including Selection, Information, Analysis, Creativity, Evaluation, Development, Implementation and Reporting.  


She also introduced their pilot projects with Online approach and Offline approach.  For Online approach, some recommendations were generated through VA/VE and S-Curve analysis.  She proposed deeper integration between VA/VE and TRIZ.  Finally, she concluded that GE saw value in workshop modulating TRIZ/VA/VE content, so as to shift smoothly the focus between radical innovation and cost-out intervention.  


The fourth speaker was Mr. Arthur Lok (Partner, China Institute for Innovation) and his topic was “Combining Hidden Customer Need tools and MPV to generate product concept”.  Firstly, he demonstrated different innovation product and some questions to stimulate our thinking such as “Is MPV the parameter for Main Function?”  Kano model told us that was not because excitement could change to basic with time.  


Mr. Lok combined MPV four stages in S-Curve into three phase named “Excitement Stage”, “Performance Stage” and “Basic Stage”.  Then he emphasized Parameter for customer value (Perceived Value) which included Functional Value, Emotional Value and Social Value.  


The fifth speaker was representative of Prof. Yu Fei  (Hebei University of Technology, China) and the topic named “A Knowledge Inspired Trimming Method Based On TRIZ”.  Trimming is one method of reorganizing system functions with partial existing resources; this study was based on enhancing the system level of idealization.  


Then he briefed the trimming and multiple trimming strategies to us.  He also mentioned the trimming innovation design process model based on knowledge.  Finally, he concluded that this study aimed to introduce the inventive principles as the inspired knowledge of mining the available resources in the system or super-system, having making up the limitation of lacking objective knowledge inspiration in the process of system useful function assignment in the existing trimming.


During lunch break, I took a photo with Dr. Sun in the venue.


Mr. Sung-Wook Kang (Director, Value Innovation Program (VIP) Center, Samsung Electronics, South Korea) was the sixth speaker and his presentation title was “Solving the Toner Adhesion Problem to Cyclone in Toner Manufacturing Plant”.  Firstly, he identified the problem statement that the toner used in laser printer was found production loss in drying process in which the cyclone fouling problem come up.  


Mr. Sung-Wook Kang summarized the project under DFSS approach and using Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Function Analysis, Contradiction Analysis, Function Oriented Search, etc.  The production loss improvement was enhanced upto 60% within 4 weeks starting project!


The seventh speaker was Ms. G. Nagashiresha (GE India Technology Centre, Bangalore, India) and her topic entitled “Application of Flow Analysis to study losses in Power Transmission & Distribution”.  Her presentation content included Energy Losses, Types of losses, Flow Analysis, Trend of Flow enhancement.   Then she introduced that there were two types of loss including Technical and Non-Technical (Power Theft).


For Technical loss, it separated to Fixed Loss from Corona losses, Leakage current, Di-electric losses and losses due to measuring and control elements; and Variable Loss included Joule losses, Impedance losses, Contact resistant, etc.  Then Ms. G. Nagashiresha briefed the TRIZ  Flow Analysis and got five solutions and they were “Reduce density of flow”, “Eliminate resonance”, “Redistribute the flow”, “Modify the flow” and “Modify the damaged object”.  


Ms. Tiziana Bertoncelli (Research Engineer at GE Global Research) was the eighth speaker again and her topic was “Synchronous Reluctance Machine Analysis and Electric Machine Forecasting Using TRIZ”.  She said this project goal was to decrease demagnetization of ferrite permanent magnets (PMs).


She employed TRIZ analysis to understand failure root causes and identify solutions to protect magnets. After functional analysis, she proposed a “Generalized Function Model” for similar product during employed TRIZ.  She concluded that a model for a generalized electric machine derived for the specific one which was a subset, this principle could be applied to the different directions of optimization, addressing material science, magnetic, etc.


During the break, I took a photo with Dr. Simon Litvin (TRIZ Master).  So I feel closer to Altshuller’s philosophy.


I was also met Mr. Ming-Cheng Shih (石明正) (Vice Chairman, TRIZ Innovation & Development Association (TiDA); Industrial Technology research Institute)


Dr. Min Yan (IE Dept., School of Electromechanical Engineering, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Computer Integrated Manufacturing System, Guang Dong University of Technology) was the ninth speaker and her presentation topic entitled “TRIZ in Guangdong”.  Firstly, Dr. Min Yan briefed the TRIZ in China history that seeding period was from 1980s to 1990s; then introduction period from 2001 to 2014 through different training programmes.  Development period was since 2007.


Then Dr. Min Yan introduced different government departments in Guangdong established a TRIZ Application System including academic, industries, government departments and training organizations.


At the end, Dr. Min Yan concluded through her perspective that the initial stage needed policy, capital, plan and organization; the 1st stage needed promotion and application for trial; the 2nd stage needed to promote application and in-house training in industries and the future was expected to enhance the application range of different industries and policy support.


The tenth speaker was Mr. Näther S. (Continental Automotive GmbH, Germany) and his topic named “TRIZ Integration and Project Managers – Discovering Further TRIZ Benefits”.  Firstly, Mr. Näther S. defined Product Life Cycle (PLC) and role of project manager, as well as, using alternative way to implement TRIZ with support of the project manager.  


Mr. Näther S. raised an example that a refreshed start using TRIZ-tools could be very helpful.  He also proposed the 8D process which was a useful framework to include some TRIZ-tools such as CECA.  Finally, he concluded this integration experiences should be gathered by discovering further TRIZ benefits.


The eleventh speaker was Prof. Youn-Jan Lin (Professor, Department of Management, Ming-Hsin University of Science and Technology, Taiwan) and his presentation was “The Integration of TRIZ and SCAMPER for a more Comrehensive Innovative Approach”.  


Prof. Lin explained to integrate SCAMPER into TRIZ because TRIZ was not easy tool for beginner.  7 letters of the word “SCAMPER” refered to the 7 innovative approaches below:
-          Substitute = Is there a new function or material which can replace the original?
-          Combine = What functions can be integrated with the original functions? How to integrate and use?
-          Adapt = Can the original material, function, or appearance be adapted slightly?
-          Magnify/Modify = Can the original material, function, or appearance be magnified or modified?
-          Put to other use = In addition to existing functions, are there any other uses?
-          Eliminate = What functions can be eliminated? What materials can be reduced?
    Re-arrange = Can the sequence be re-arranged?


Finally, Prof. Lin used the traditional SCAMPER combined with TRIZ using Subsystem and 9-window as starting point.  He demonstrated the Substitute of Correction fluid as example.


The twelfth speaker was Dr. Dong Ya-fan (Hebei University of Technology, Tianjin) and his topic was “Study of Integration Process Model between Design-Centric Complexity Theory and TRIZ”.   He employed Su-Field model to reduce the system complexity by integrating the design process complexity theory (DCC) and Su-Field model in TRIZ.  


The relationship between Su-Field model and design process complexity theory (DCC) was discussed.  Dr. Dong said it provided a new direction and laid a foundation for the new product design and innovation. 


I (Manager, QS, HKSTP) was the last third speaker and my topic named “Organization Innovation employing TRIZ under Quality Innovation Management System Framework”. There was almost 140 expert participated the conference.   Firstly, I introduced Organization Innovation which included Innovation of System, Operation, Process, Product and Service.  Then I introduced the ISO 9001:2015 new requirement and the clause of CEN/TS 16555-1:2013 Innovation Management System.


I also briefed the coming ISO trends that a new ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 279 was established to develop ISO 50501 standard for Innovation Management.  I predicted the coming standard would combine ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System and CEN/TS 16555-1:2013 Innovation Management System.


The integrated framework was proposed as following diagram in which included all CEN/TS 16555 series (from -1 to -7).  The ISO 9001:2015 PDCA model was used and combined the Innovation Funnel in the operation part and then covered by different standards including Strategic Intelligence Management, Innovation Thinking, IP Management, Collaboration Management, Creativity Management and Innovation Management Assessment.


After that I introduced our TSC TRIZ Team (3T) which had ten engineers with MATRIZ level 1 training course and formed in 2014. I appreciated their effort for trial project.  The first small TRIZ project was to solve the loading problem in chamber under Reliability Laboratory.  


Finally, I presented our project which employed Level 1 tools step by step and we found different Inventive Principles (Ips) after considering different engineering parameters.  Frequency Table was employed because the high frequency the Ips appeared, the higher probability the solution come from.


The final result was demonstrated and which productivity increased three times.  The Ips was separation and the new version is 1/4 size of original one and trimming the basket for reducing the loading.  Version 2 was considered the orientation of sample IC.  I concluded that Quality Innovation Management System (QInnoMS) would be the further framework and TRIZ was a powerful tools for technical problem solving.


The last second speaker was Mr. Stéphane Savelli (MP Solving, Belgium) and his presentation title named “Accelerated TRIZ Project Execution”.  Mr. Savelli analysed the TRIZ consulting services included project execution, group facilitation and training.  However, TRIZ consulting companies in face of a contradiction between cost and quality of developed ideas. 


Then Mr. Savelli introduced different TRIZ-based Service under MPVs performances in three type of services.  There were six MPVs included 1/Cost, 1/Time of result, 1/Time devoted by the client, Quality of developed ideas, TRIZ skills developed by the client and Results appropriation by the client.  It was found that TRIZ skills developed by the client were low.  Therefore, the project goal was to reduce project execution cost.  He concluded to partial or total trimming of some TRIZ tools and some TRIZ tools outputs.  (Remark during Q&A: Mr. Sergei Ikovenko commented that “Trimming” term was not appropriate in here because function should be maintained after trimming.  I would like to use the term “LEAN” the TRIZ tools.)


The last speaker was Mr. Sang-Jong Kim (IP Group, Semiconductor R&D Centre, Samsung Electronics) and his presentation topic entitled “S-Curve Analysis on Mass Production Time Using TRIZ”.  Mr. Kim developed the Two-Peak Curve Model from the second stage of S-curve development to predict mass production of a technical product two years after the second peak point of the number of patents.


Mr. Kim briefed the Two-Peak Curve Model and predict from 1st stage to 2nd stage and then to 3rd stage for mass production after 2nd peak in 2nd stage (two year after the first peak).  


He also mentioned several cases to explain it and one of cases was Sony PlayStation VR.  Mr. Kim concluded that the two-peak curve model could steer research and development in today’s competitive market. 


After the Day 1 conference, I met Prof. Wang yanwei (王妍瑋) from Harbin Institute of Petroleum (哈爾濱石油學院) and she introduced Mr. WU Yongzhi (吳永志) to me and we took a photo for memory.


After that all participants took a group photo outside the venue.


140 people attended TRIZfest 2016 in Beijing and we would change venue tomorrow to CAQ new building.


At night, we had cocktail party in hotel.
