CityU EngD(EM) Graduation Dinner 2013

The Celebration Dinner for EngD Graduates 2013 in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM), City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) was held on 16th Nov 2013. Before the event, all graduates took a group photo with their supervisors.

We were honor to invite Mr. Lam Chiu-Ying (林超英, Former director of the Hong Kong observatory) as our guest speaker. EngD Society Chairlady (Dr. Amie Lai), Vice-Chairman (Dr. Herbert Yeung) and Secretary (Dr. Lotto Lai) took a photo with guest speaker for memory.

Dr. Herbert Yeung (Vice-chairman, CityU EngD Society) was MC to arrange the dinner event.

In the beginning of celebration, Dr. Amie Lai (Chairlady of CityU EngD Society) gave an opening speech. She introduced the background of EngD Programme and EngD Society activities. Moreover, She explained EngD Society logo which was in English looking at horizontal and in Chinese looking at vertical.

Prof. Kwok Leung TSUI (Head and Chair Professor of Industrial Engineering, SEEM, CityU) gave a welcome speech. He shared a book named "The Signal and the Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail — but Some Don't" by Nate Silver. Prof. Tsui said the author knew how to make use what he learnt such as use statistic to predict the result. There were two characteristics: Luck and Skill. Which could be separated into Low Luck & Low Skill (e.g. tic tac toe); Low Luck & High Skill (e.g. EngD course), High Luck & Low Skill; and High Luck and High Skill (e.g. Poker). Finally, Prof. Tsui said Big Data would fool people but if we got the right data with right method, we could avoid prediction fail.

Our guest speaker was Mr. Lam Chiu-Ying (林超英, Former director of the Hong Kong observatory) and he shared the topic "Climate Change". He explained that the blue line predicted temperature change without human activities and the black line predicted with human activities. He said the significant rise of globally averaged combined land and ocean surface temperature after 1980 was observed. Then arctic sea-ice was recorded minimum coverage on 14 Sep 2012.

After that Mr. Lam briefed different scenarios of CO2 level after 2100. Because of urbanisation and comsumerism in the last half century, the CO2 level was upto ~394 ppm in 2012. Lastly, he said our future depended on our existing life style.

Dr. Amie Lai presented a souvenir to Mr. Lam Chiu-Ying.

EngD Society donated HK$300 to Red Cross in the name of guest speaker as souvenir.

Grateful Messages from Graduates session to give a chance for each graduate to thanks his family, teachers and shared the EngD journey.
