ASQ World Conference - Day 1

The theme of ASQ World Conference for Quality and Improvement (WCQI) is “The New Role of Quality: Tomorrow’s Applications of Proven Quality Tools”. The opening of the conference was held in Spirit of Pittsburgh Ballroom of David L. Lawrence Convention Center on 17 May 2011.

Then I attended the International Team Excellence Award Process Presentations entitled “Ramaiah Institute of Management (RIM) Studies”. The award was performed in United States since 1985 and held annually at the ASQ World Conference for organizations to showcase and gain recognition for their continuous improvement process.


The speaker presented their project based on the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence for education.


Each Baldrige criteria formed as a project using different quality tools were mentioned.


The improvement process considered the different stakeholders of RIM included student, faculty, staff and founder – entrepreneurs.


After that I joined the Networking Break with Sponsors and Exhibitors Exhibit in Hall A. The ASQ booth was located in the middle of the Hall and ASQ book sell booth was found.

Then I joined the Workshop entitled “Innovative QM for Lab and Ancillary Services”.


The speaker was Ms. Lucia Berte (Laboratories Made Better! P.C., Broomfield, CO).


She introduced the model called Quality System Essentials (QSE) and separated into three blocks as “The Lab”, “The Work” and “The Performance”.


The Laboratory’s Path of workflow was demonstrated which separated into three workflow included Pre-analytic, Analytic and Post-analytic.


The advantages of QSE were described as met regulation, improved patient safety, cost saving and competitive advantage.


What and How to improve the patient safety were explained. They employed Lean and Six Sigma in work process.



Finally, cost of quality was analysis and the cost of failure could become profit.
